HINTON: These things could get more intelligent than us and could decide to take over, and we need to worry now about how we prevent that happening.ĪLLYN: He came to this position recently after two things happened. But now Hinton has left Google and is sounding the alarm. This breakthrough is the foundation of so many AI tools used in everything from analyzing MRI scans and hospitals to helping farmers understand crop yields and, of course, used in the hit service ChatGPT. You could feed it tons and tons of data, like photos, and it would learn how to identify, say, a flower from a dog. It's called that because it's a geeky computer system that kind of operates the way a brain works, like the way neurons work. Can you hear me now?ĪLLYN: In 2012, Hinton and two of his students at the University of Toronto built what's called a neural network. I'm like, is we in a movie right now or what?ĪLLYN: The old dude, of course, is Geoffrey Hinton, a 75-year-old British academic living in Toronto who has spent 50 years developing cutting-edge AI, most recently for Google.
